  • The Sweet Life of Stella Madison edition by Lara M Zeises Children eBooks PDF Reader SJV

  • This ebook includes a biographical introduction, a short critical analysis of Oscar Wilde and a brief introduction to this work. Moorside Press has placed an emphasis on creating a usable formatting system for all of Wilde's plays, denoting characters, stage directions and settings, separate from spoken lines.

Written in 1893, but not performed until January 1895, An Ideal Husband was the third of Wilde's popular satirical comedies, following A Woman of No Importance and preceding The Importance of Being Earnest. The play revolves around an attempt by Mrs Cheveley to blackmail Sir Robert Chiltern into changing government policy so that she can profit from the decision. Only the dapper Lord Goring – a character that could only have been written by Wilde as himself – is able to thwart the plot by reference to Mrs Cheveley's nefarious past, while also saving the reputations of other characters and achieving something for himself in the process.

As with all of Wilde's satirical plays, there is more than just the plot on offer. Here, as well as delivering the familiar message about the past catching up with those in high office, he also has a dig at government business as carried out by the establishment of the day. But all that is less obvious than the skill with which Wilde delivers a plot that is at times complicated and which may also appear to be a closed door for some apparently doomed characters. How despondency is turned into rhapsody in the space of a few lines is a mark of Wilde.

  • An updated edition of Ben Pimlott’s classic biography of the Queen ‘There is no better biography of Elizabeth II.’ PETER HENNESSY, Independent on Sunday

The royal family have been through a tumultuous decade, but with the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton, Prince Philip’s 90th birthday and the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations, there is renewed interest and appreciation of our monarchy. The Queen is an in-depth look at the woman at the centre of it all and is the only biography to take Elizabeth II seriously as the subject of historical biography, or to examine the influences that formed her and the ideas she represents.

Ben Pimlott (described by Andrew Marr in the Independent as ‘the best writer of political biography now writing’) treats the Head of State to the rigorous and objective scrutiny he applied to major political personalities, using a wide range of sources, including interviews, diaries and letters, and papers in the Royal Archives.

The Queen looks at the social, political and psychological aspects of his subject in detail, as well as at the changing role of Monarchy in the British Constitution. In the process, the book displays all the author’s formidable analytic and narrative skills, and provides a gripping yet sensitive account of one of the most publicised – yet least known – figures of our time. It is vital reading for all those who care about public life in Britain – past, present and to come.

Note that it has not been possible to include the same picture content that appeared in the original print version.

  • In 1851, at the age of twenty-two, Tolstoy joined the Russian army and travelled to the Caucasus as a soldier. The four years that followed were among the most significant in his life, and deeply influenced the stories collected here. Begun in 1852 but unfinished for a decade, The Cossacks describes the experiences of Olenin, a young cultured Russian who comes to despise civilization after spending time with the wild Cossack people. Sevastopol Sketches, based on Tolstoy's own experiences of the siege of Sevastopol in 1854-55, is a compelling consideration of the nature of war, while Hadji Murat, written towards the end of his life, returns to the Caucasus of Tolstoy's youth to explore the life of a great leader torn apart by a conflict of loyalties. Written at the end of the nineteenth century, it is amongst the last and greatest of Tolstoy's shorter works.

  • One of Fuller’s most popular works, Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth, is a brilliant synthesis of his world view. In this very accessible volume, edited by Jaime Snyder, Fuller investigates the great challenges facing humanity. How will humanity survive? How does automation influence individualization? How can we utilize our resources more effectively to realize our potential to end poverty in this generation? He questions the concept of specialization, calls for a design revolution of innovation, and offers advice on how to guide “spaceship earth” toward a sustainable future.
